Stars Tone Down Glitter at Golden Globes
Last night’s Golden Globe Awards may have spotlighted a new jewelry trend. Despite impressive displays of decolletage as Hollywood’s elite traipsed down the red carpet, few stars chose to wear the impressive gem-laden necklaces popular in year’s past. That’s not to say there wasn’t plenty of glam and glitter on display, but most of it was confined to exquisite earrings or layered bracelets. A few stars wore gemmed collars or stunning pendants, but this year that kind of ostentatious flash was definitely in the minority. Tasteful, simple gem pendants were more in evidence among those who wore them; but bare necks and decolletage ruled the night. For the most part, Hollywood’s stars let their dresses do the talking.
It appears that even though many Hollywood celebrities now favor cubic zirconia over natural diamonds, no one wanted to flaunt the appearance of too much wealth when so many people in the country are struggling financially. With viewers — close up or on the television screen — unable to tell the difference between cubic zirconia and natural gems, it looks like Hollywood’s stars didn’t want to take a chance on alienating their public.
What many Golden Globe viewers may not realize is that since the release of the Leonardo DiCaprio film Blood Diamond in 2006, many of Hollywood’s elite have eschewed natural diamonds in favor of cubic zirconia. It’s a deliberate statement of social justice condemning the inhumane work conditions at diamond mines and the use of diamonds to finance brutal civil wars. However, looks can be deceiving and loose cubic zirconia look just like natural diamonds. Guess the stars didn’t want to take any chances.
