An ardent collector of amethyst, Catherine added many of the most beautiful crystals to Russia’s crown jewels. Bishops and prelates have worn amethyst ecclesiastical amethyst rings for centuries, believing the gem to be a symbol of God’s spirit. St. Valentine is said to have worn an amethyst ring engraved with the figure of cupid.
